Reduce emissions with new techniques
MAKING THE CHAIN
SUSTAINABLE TOGETHER
As a cooperative, we are in a great position to collectively translate your ambitions to reduce emissions in the supply chain into innovative technical solutions on board our members’ ships. Whether it concerns the newest diesel engines meeting the latest requirements or hydrogen-powered ships, at NPRC we create a sustainable supply chain together.
EMISSION-FREE
INLAND NAVIGATION IN 2050
On 11 June 2019, the Green Deal Zeevaart, Binnenvaart en Havens (Shipping, Inland Shipping and Ports) was signed. The objective of this Green Deal is to achieve emission-free and climate-neutral inland navigation by 2050.
NPRC is working on sustainable solutions in zero-emission waterway transport with chain partners and affiliated inland waterway operators. This can be achieved through battery or hydrogen electric-powered ships. A prime example is the WEVA project where NPRC has partnered with inland shipping entrepreneur Harm Lenten to commission a hydrogen electric ship to transport salt on behalf of Nobian. This type of cooperation between the client, inland shipping operator and the cooperative, creates future-proof and sustainable supply chains without emissions.
HVO &
BIOFUELS
CO2 reduction can also be achieved by using biofuels. For example, Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 89%, when compared to fossil diesel. Using our in-house developed calculation model, NPRC calculates the financial impact for your specific supply chain within one day, taking into account the fluctuating market index for CO2 emission allowances. NPRC closely follows developments in the use of other biofuels such as methanol, for example.
REDUCING NITROGEN WITH STAGE V AND
POST-TREATMENT DEVICE
An increasing part of our fleet is equipped with a so-called Stage V engine, a European standard for marine engines. Such engines have lower fuel consumption and are equipped with a particulate filter and catalytic converter. Another part of our fleet has an after-treatment plant, to capture as much NOx and particulate matter as possible.
NPRC encourages its members to make inland waterway vessels more sustainable through the voucher system. A great step towards cleaner inland vessels.

‘Tata Steel is participating in studies investigating how to run ships on hydrogen, on ammonia or electric, but that research takes time. With HVO, you can already achieve a solid reduction just by changing the input’
Daan Sabbé – Tata Steel
